Corn Nematicide

BIOST Nematicide 100

You Can’t See Them.  But They are There.

Everyone talks about plant parasitic nematodes in soybean, but in countless instances nematodes are not even a consideration in corn.  Many times, significant yield losses are not attributed to nematodes because you cannot see them with the naked eye.  Oftentimes, these losses are incorrectly blamed on other things like herbicide injury, nutrient deficiency, and environmental conditions as it is difficult to distinguish nematode damage from these symptoms.  Today, nematodes are more of a threat to corn than ever before.  Fact is, some corn nematode species can reduce corn yields by 10 to 20 percent or more. ( Greg Tylka, Department of Plant Pathology) 2009.

Nematode symptoms in corn include visible above ground signs like uneven plant height, wilting, smaller ears and kernels, yellowing, and stunting. “Hot spots” in a field that show these signs in one area while the rest of the field is flourishing is a strong indication nematodes are the culprit. Below ground, if roots are swollen with a decrease in fine root hairs and root branching there is also likely nematode pressure. Nematode root feeding can also open up avenues for a myriad of soil borne diseases to attack roots. The result is compromised roots that cannot properly uptake the water and nutrients critical to the plants’ successful growth and, in the end, decreased yield for corn farmers.

Current production practices in corn can also affect nematode pressure.  Continuous corn can be a breeding ground for an increased nematode presence.  No-till and reduced-till are not as disruptive to existing nematode populations allowing them to thrive and multiply for future seasons.

In short, nematodes are a very real, economically impactful challenge in corn.  And the only way to control them is to take soil and root samples so you know for sure the exact pest you are up against. Then be proactive with a superior seed treatment like BIOST® Nematicide.

BIOST® Nematicide is an innovative broad-spectrum seed treatment Bio-nematicide with activity on eggs and juveniles of early season nematodes as well as soil dwelling insects in corn. BIOST® Nematicide yields equal to or greater than the fungicide and insecticide standard 92% of the time.

When used in combination with a neonicitinoid seed treatment, BIOST® Nematicide provides a dual mode of action on yield-robbing pests like seed corn maggot, wireworms and corn root worm.  So, in addition to nematode protection, BIOST® Nematicide actually reduces potentially devastating soil borne pest damage therefore further protecting the yield potential of corn seed.

BIOST® Nematicide  controls all serious nematode pests in corn including:

  • Lesion nematodes
  • Needle
  • Dagger
  • Root-Knot
  • Sting
  • Stubby Root
  • Stunt

What is BIOST® Nematicide 100?

  • It is a seed treatment nematicide that kills nematodes within 24 to 48 hours
  • It has activity on eggs and juveniles of the most important nematodes in corn - lesion, stubby root, sting, needle, stunt, dagger and root-knot nematode.
  • BIOST® Nematicide is a BIO-Nematicide derived from heat=killed Burkholderia rinojenses and its spent fermentation media - non-living.
  • It is a nematicide with multiple modes of action via enzymes and toxins
  • It is a concentrated liquid formulation with 3 year shelf-life stability
  • Compatible with most fungicide/insecticide combinations
  • Use rate on corn - 6 to 8 fl.oz./cwt
  • It also provides additional protection on soil dwelling insects (wireworms/seed corn maggot)
