Everyone talks about plant parasitic nematodes in soybean, but in countless instances nematodes are not even a consideration in corn. Many times, significant yield losses are not attributed to nematodes because you cannot see them with the naked eye. Oftentimes, these losses are incorrectly blamed on other things like herbicide injury, nutrient deficiency, and environmental conditions as it is difficult to distinguish nematode damage from these symptoms. Today, nematodes are more of a threat to corn than ever before. Fact is, some corn nematode species can reduce corn yields by 10 to 20 percent or more. Nematode symptoms in corn include visible above ground signs like uneven plant height, wilting, smaller ears and kernels, yellowing, and stunting. “Hot spots” in a field that show these signs in one area while the rest of the field is flourishing is a strong indication nematodes are the culprit. Below ground, if roots are swollen with a decrease in fine root hairs and root branching there is also likely nematode pressure.
