The origin of the word pulse is from the Latin word puls meaning thick mush or porridge traditionally made with dried vegetables. Pulses are edible seeds from annual leguminous crops that include chick peas, beans, peas and lentils harvested dried. Soybeans, nuts and crops that produce oil are not considered pulse crops. Neither are any crops that are harvested while they are still green, like green beans, for example.
In addition to providing food and feed, pulses are known also for their nitrogen-fixing traits -- both for themselves and for providing richer, more fertile soil. Albaugh takes special pride in providing pulse crop farmers seed treatment options that can protect their crops from insects and disease and a biostimulant that helps promote a healthy, vigorous yields. Protecting the yield of a crop that actually puts nitrogen into the soil simultaneously improves the quality of the soil and reduces fertilizer inputs. That quickly translates to increased profit for farmers.
Pulses include chickpeas, peas and lentils, such as:
- red, green, yellow and brown lentils
- chickpeas (chana or garbanzo beans)
- garden peas
- black-eyed peas
- broad beans (fava beans)
